The Cumberland County coroner refused to release the cause and manner of death of a 21-year-old Shippensburg University football player.
The corner argued that the Coroners Act does not make those details public until after January of the next year.
Both sides agreed the information was public. The issue is timing. The state’s new Right to Know law says agencies have five days (in most instances) to release a document.
So, the TV station appealed the case. It’s gone through the office of open records and the case moved on up to Commonwealth Court.
The student’s family has said they do not want the information made public, saying it includes sensitive medical information.
